The Scared of Khrushchev Had
After Joseph Stalin died, Nikita Khrushchev came to power. In a meeting, Khrushchev strongly criticized Stalin. Khrushchev complained about many mistaken strategies and wrong decisions by Stalin that resulted in great damage to the country.
When Khrushchev was complaining, someone passed over a slip of paper to him. “Why didn’t you criticize those wrong decisions to prevent the damage at that time Stalin implemented his policies?”
Khrushchev got angry and roared “Who did this? Who wrote this note? Stand up!” However, there was only silence from the attendees. No one said anything.
Finally, Khrushchev slowly said from the platform, “You know, back then, I was like you now. I was so scared at that time.”
When we evaluate historical accounts, we should endeavor to understand what dilemmas or difficult situations leaders faced at that time. That is, we should try to step into their shoes. And we should judge their behavior based on the norms of their time period and culture, not ours. If we don’t make an effort to see things from their perspective, we won't be able to understand why they made such decisions, and we won't be able to fairly evaluate their behavior.
To evaluate one's performance takes more than intellect; it also takes heart. In the workplace, if we only use our intellect to evaluate other people’s ideas and performance, we will have a distorted image that is overly critical. And it will seem to others like we shallow thinking to evaluate other people's behavior. Moreover, we will arrive at an invalid or incomplete analysis, which means that we won't get to the bottom of any correctable problems. And if we don't get to the bottom of things, we won't be able to come up with solutions to resolve problems and iron out disagreements (settle conflicts).
So, when you evaluate the behavior of others, be sure to endeavor to see things from their perspectives. Use your heart and mind, and don't rush to judgment. Through this way, you will be able to more fairly evaluate others and to make improvements going forward for yourself.
